During the month of October, 2007 domestic violence survivors and supporters  joined together across America to promote victims’ rights and services, and to educate our communities about the devastating impact of violence on victims, neighborhoods, schools and the Sicangu Nation as a whole.

We know that violence is a major predicament on the Rosebud. Violence against women and children in our homes and communities is too a major problem.

Domestic Violence is a serious problem for women, men and children.  Nearly one third of American women (31%) reported being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.  In the Rosebud Reservation, the number of domestic violence victims showed a staggering increase during 2007. Every year an estimated 3.3 million children are exposed to violence perpetrated against their mothers or female care givers, placing them at high risk for numerous emotional and physical health problems

During the month of October, we sponsored several events that focus on the ability of men to make a difference.  Men – as fathers, brothers, coaches, teachers, uncles, friends and mentors – are in a unique position to prevent domestic violence through their actions and words.  Our message is simple…men can teach boys that violence does not equal strength.  The majority of men, if asked, are willing to talk to children about the importance of healthy, violence-free relationships. Domestic Violence Awareness Month is both an opportunity and a call for men and women to get involved and speak out.

The month’s events included: October 4th -  National Day of Unity awareness walk in Rosebud. October 17th - candlelight walk in mission from DSS to the Antelope community center. October 22-23 “Women Strengthening Women” DV conference for survivors and advocates in Rapid City, SD.; and October 30th– fifth annual Breast Cancer Awareness Dinner held at the Council Chambers in Rosebud. The White Buffalo Calf Woman Society would like to remind you that all individuals have something to contribute to the fight against Domestic Violence. Together we can end violence in our homes, schools, and communities. Ask yourself: “What kind of role model are you? Take a stand, speak out… silence will not end the violence!”

For decades, violent crime victims have join forces to ensure that all survivors are aware of their rights, and have access to community services and justice system based resources that can help them in the aftermath of a crime. The White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. provides many programs to victims and perpetrators with crisis intervention, counseling, support, safety planning, and advocacy through the criminal and juvenile justice system.
