          For an entire week, the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. celebrated their 31st anniversary in Mission, SD.

     Among the activities organized for the celebration were a week long of cultural teachings, a display and exhibition open to the community, an strategic planning meeting for future outreach projects, a two day conference for survivors of domestic violence and those who assist them in their healing journey, a public dinner and concert held at the Rosebud Casino and finally a pow-wow and honoring.

     The celebration took place at Sinte Gleska University Multipurpose building and student center in Mission, SD. All activities, teaching and exhibitions were open to the communities, visitors and guests throughout the entire month on October.

     In it efforts to unite, work together and reach out to all members of the community, specially the younger generations, the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society made sure all activities were available to all and culturally specific. Among those activities were hand games, traditional cooking, arts and crafts, quilting, tipi building and women’s ceremonies such as naming, ear piercing and others. On Thursday October 23rd a strategic planning session for future outreach projects was held, this session was open to the public with the idea of understanding our communities needs

     On October 24 - 25, 2008, along with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Sicangu Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence, a projects of the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. held their annual Survivors and Advocates healing conference in Mission SD. The conference took place at the Site Gleska University multipurpose building in Mission and it was coordinated by the organization as part of their 31st anniversary week long celebration.

     The given title of this year’s get-together was “Nake Nula Waun, I will be ready for anything, anywhere, anytime”. Mainly geared toward domestic Violence survivors and advocates, the gathering’s main focus was to educate on DV related subjects raging from what is DV to how the federal government responds to violent crimes of such nature in Indian Reservations.

 

     On Friday evening, a free concert was held at Rosebud Casino featuring Jackie Bird and Roxanne Zasue as the main attraction. A dinner was also served to those who attended the concert.

     To culminate the events, on the afternoon of Saturday October 25th, a powwow and honoring held at Sinte Gleska’s multipurpose building. Staff members, guest and many supporters were honored and recognized for their effort and continuous support.
