Over 100 people participated on the 21st annual “National Day of Unity Awareness Walk” this passed October 4th in Rosebud, SD. The walk started at the IHS hospital in Rosebud and ended at the Tribal Building with president Bordeaux reading an executive proclamations declaring October as Domestic Violence awareness month on the Rosebud Reservation. The caravan of participants made several stops on their way to the RST admin. Building from the IHS hospital. First, the RST Law Enforcement and Tribal Court building were visited by the crowed shortly after commencing; Sergeant Luke Black Bear Spoke a few words on behalf of the Police force and Wilma Robertson Represented the Tribal Court. Spotted Tail cemetery was next along the way. Some flowers were laid down and words of rememberence were shared by Tillie Black Bear, Ernestine Eagle Elk and her family. Each year organizations across the country join forces to promote victims rights and services, and to educate and raise awareness among their communities about the devastating impact of violence on victims, neighborhoods, schools and our nation and a whole. We, as indigenous people understand violence against women and children in not only unnatural, but a threat to the harmony and peace of all things in creation. All individuals within a community are responsible for providing safety to women and children and holding the batterer accountable for their actions. It is time for us all to remember those who have lost their lives to domestic Violence, to share the joy of those who survived, and now more than ever to collaborate and support all of those in turtle island that stride to end violence among us. |
