In observance of National Domestic Violence  Awareness Month, the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. collaborated with  the South Dakota coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault to hold their first  State wide DV conference in Rapid City, SD.

The team already hosted a conference last April directed toward sexual assault survivors and advocates. This time, although the format and concept of the event was very similar to the previous one, the focus was Domestic Violence survivors. Speakers from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the South Dakota Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, and the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc., spoke to the attendees about unnatural power and control tactics used regularly by abusers.

Around sixty survivors ages 14 and up, and more than one hundred Domestic Violence advocates from across the state attended.

The goal of the conference was to bring Domestic Violence survivors and advocates to a place of healing and strengthening, and to give them tools to use in becoming leaders in their communities.

Robert Moore, Council man for the Rosebud Sioux Tribe was in attendance during the opening ceremonies, and addressed the audience expressing his commitment and support to end violent crimes in Indian Country.

The conference, the first of its kind for survivors of Domestic Violence was a great  success; survivors and advocates became united and a strong bond was creates.

Some of the highlight of the event were the number of healing activities provided to all of the attendees, among those you would have seen: massage therapy, yoga, reflexology, acupuncture, herbal medicine, cultural healing, mask making, talking sticks… along with some diva providers such us hair styling, pedicures, manicures,  and make-up.
