During October, the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. urged the community members on the Rosebud Reservation to join forces with millions nation wide and extend their support to those battling breast cancer and the families and friends of those affected by it. Their courage and determination are an inspiration to us all. Every year, more than 40.000 American women lose their lives to breast cancer. About one in almost every eight women will develop the disease in our life time, far too many. After lung cancer, this is the leading killer among women under 35 and it is by far the leading cause of cancer death among women ages 35 to 54. One of the most common misconceptions when it comes to breast cancer is the believe that it will happen to those with some level of family history. Only five to ten percent of breast cancers occur in women with a defined genetic predisposition. The majority of breast cancer cases are random, increasing dramatically with age. The White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. hosted their fifth annual breast cancer awareness dinner this past October 30th, 2007 at 6:00 pm at the Council Chambers in Rosebud, SD. The event was open to the public and a meal was provided to those in attendance. Carey C. Buhler, MD, along with Craig Lafferty and Tricia Morrison from the Rosebud IHS radiology and mammography department talked to the audience during dinner about the importance of early detection and proper examination methods. In a presentations that lasted over 1 hr, the participants were able to asked questions and receive very specific instructions on a variety of pressing issues on the subject.
