A recent program on South Dakota Public Broadcasting took an in depth look at suicide on the Rosebud Reservation.

Several locales made the trip to appear on the show, including suicide survivors, Marie Wilcox, Angel ‘pixie Wilson’ and Lino Spotted Elk. Also appearing were Tillie Black Bear, Executive Director of the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc, and Bernie Waln, Mental Health Professional at IHS.

The program aired live on Thursday, May 31, and again on Sunday, June 3. To view the program link to the SDPB web site at www.sdpb.org and look into their achieves. Once there scroll to the bottom of the page and click on play media.

The program features excerpts from recently completed suicide prevention video “Suicide is not a video game, you won’t be able to press play again.”

The production is now available through the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc in Mission, South Dakota.

The 23 minute video talks about the devastation suicide brings to families here on the Rosebud Reservation, but gives useful information about signs to look for when someone is considering suicide and how to respond to a suicidal person.

The video is a grass-roots production of the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. and it was directed and edited by Richard K. Winter of J&R Media Group, LLC based in Mission, SD. Its message shares interviews of local youth and families and their feeling on suicide. The video shows a series of uplifting photos of young people and the many wonderful things that are taking place her on the Reservation.

If you would like a copy of the video or would like a presentation to be given to youth in your community or organization by the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. please call 605-856-2317.
